At the conclusion of the March 30 meeting at the Kailua View Estates recreation center, no one disputed that excessive speed was an issue on Nani Kailua Drive. Adding speed humps was the topic of discussion.
Those opposed said it would add more traffic to Aloha Kona Drive and Hoene Street, increase crime such as on Kupuna Street, open the couty to a possible lawsuit, if someone loses control of their vehicle because of speed humps and the petition drive in favor of speed control was not properly done.
Those in favor seemed to be less vocal. Some alternative suggestions were: add more stop signs (that no one stops at anyways), add police patrols and enforcement (that the county has no money for) and close off the Hienaloli bypass.
I don’t know if it really matters whether or not a petition drive was done properly or whether people are for or against speed humps. I know that data was collected and it was determined that the majority of drivers speed on Nani Kailua. Nani Kailua is a residential street with 25 mph signs posted and ignored.
I’m not excited about speed humps myself but the data should not be ignored, now that we have it. Permanent speed slowing devices would slow traffic, 24 hours a day, regardless of individual opinions.
Please don’t ignore the data and help make our residential street sane.

Park facility users should clean up after
Those people who ask to rent the main pavilion at Kahaluu Beach Park are sure taking advantage of our county facility. These people are supposed to remove all decorations, balloons and streamers before vacating the premises. The problem comes because the county doesn’t have anyone who can follow up on these events.
Just one person going to check would prevent rubbish being left behind and balloons left tied to the posts.
This could also prevent the county from having to refund any deposits if the lessee doesn’t fulfill the obligation to leave the premises in the same order in which they found it.
