Fight for Banyans public right of way
Banyans surf spot on Alii Drive, across from Banyan Mart and just South of Kona Bali Kai, has seen generations of surfers who wished to raise their surfing to a higher level and compete in a number of competitions held there.
Shane Dorian, who holds his annual keiki surf contest where grades make a difference in whom may participate, is one of the many who benefited from the available access to this well-known surf spot.
Banyans beach access and public domain is being threatened by management from neighbors to the north of the property. They are claiming all the area under the Banyan tree, makai of the rock wall fronting Alii Drive and north of the fenced beach access. It is a gathering place of all generations of surfers.
Private property signs have been posted and many warnings have been given to people using the area. This is another land dispute that needs to go to the top and by that, I mean the mayor.
I plead on behalf of the children and all those who enjoy Banyans to stand and fight for total access to Banyan surf spot. Here’s an idea, how about a county beach park? I know money will be an issue but we are running out of public paradise.
