Joseph Velez Sr.

Joseph Cruz Velez Sr., 93, of Hilo, died July 18, 2017, at his residence. Born in Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for Hamakua Sugar Co. and a retired owner of Velez Farms in Honokaa.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 11 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Mauna Kea Memorial Park in Papaikou for a graveside committal service. The family requests that casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Maria Margarita Velez, of Hilo; sons, Joseph Velez Jr., of Hilo, Daniel Velez, of Pismo Beach, California, and David Velez, of Honokaa; step-son, Alvin Tangalin, of Keaau; daughters, Silvia Velez Conn, of Honokaa, and Evelyn Velez, of Hilo; step-daughters, Annie Tangalin Lara, of San Diego, and Angelica Tangalin, of Keaau; sister, Janet Velez Branco, of Paauilo; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marta Duterte

Marta Platino Duterte, 75, of Holualoa, died June 25, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 5, 1941, in Alicia, Bohol, Philippines, she was a homemaker and member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 4 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kealakekua for a prayer service. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. on Aug. 5 at the church for a 10 a.m. mass; burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. The family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by sons, Anastacio (Morlina Abangan) Duterte Jr. and Fidel Duterte, both of Holualoa; and two grandsons.

Bruce Harrison

Bruce Herbert Harrison, 64, of Waikoloa, died July 17, 2017, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1952, in Baltimore, he was resident manager for Elima Lani Complex in Waikoloa.

Friends may call at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Waikoloa Community Church for a 6 p.m. celebration of life and service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations be made to Waikoloa Community Church.

He is survived by wife, Kristine Harrison, of Waikoloa; father, Charles Harrison, of Floria; brother, Craig Harrison, of Fort Collins, Colorado; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herbert Mizuire

Herbert Hiromitsu Mizuire, 83, of Hilo, died July 18, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired mechanic for J&J Auto & Body Repair, U.S. Army veteran and member of Door of Faith Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial to follow at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. The family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Eurica Mizuire, of Hilo; son, Howard Mizuire, of Pepeekeo; daughter, Laurie Ann (Dave) Griffin, of Pepeekeo; step-children, Emily (Nick) Dalmacio and Christian Cancino, both of Hilo, and Franklin Palallos, of Alaska; and step-grandchildren.

John Gardner

John L. Gardner, 91, of Willow Street, Pennsylvania and formerly of Kailua-Kona, died July 22, 2017. Born July 9, 1926, in Santa Rosa, California, he was a retired installer with Western Electric, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Civil Air Patrol pilot, Ham radio operator, Youth With A Mission volunteer, and served with the Hawaii Red Cross by setting up radio communications during emergencies and disasters.

Friends may call at noon on Aug. 4 at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery for a graveside committal service with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to University of Nations Kona, 75-5851 Kuakini Hwy. No. 256, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.

He is survived by wife, Ione Miller-Gardner, of Pennsylvania; son, William Gardner, of Lodi, California; daughters, Carol Carman, of Hawaii, and Joyce (Jas. Michael) Brown, of San Antonio, Texas; step-son, Gregory (Tamara) Miller, of Strasburg, Pennsylvania; step-daughter, Christine (Morgan) Frost, of Leola, Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Onesimo Arellano

Onesimo Valorozo Arellano, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died July 21, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a houseman at the Royal Kona Resort and member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

A three-day vigil will be held at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 at 77-6519 Seaview Circle in Kailua-Kona. Friends may call at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona for a 12:30 p.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. The family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Arellano, of Kailua-Kona; sons, Mario (Esperanza) Arellano, James (Shannon) Arellano, Percival Arellano and Wayne-Ronnie (Gladys) Arellano, all of Kailua-Kona, John (Madelyn) Arellano, Jr., of Honolulu, and Stanley (Janiza) Arellano, of Seattle; daughters, Joy Arellano, of California, and Jenna Arellano, Jerry Arellano and Jeanette Arellano, all of Kailua-Kona; brother, Ernesto Arellano, of Philippines; 23 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

MaraJean Uilani Urbanozo, 40, of Ookala, died July 1, 2017, at her residence. Born July 28, 1976, in Hilo, she was a teacher at Waipahu Intermediate School and phlebotomist technician at the Pali Momi Hospital in Honolulu.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. celebration of life. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. on Aug. 5 at the chapel for a 10 a.m. prayer service. Kiyoko Burton

Kiyoko Burton, 97, of Paauhau, died May 28, 2017, at her residence. Born in Pohakea, she was a retired farm laborer for Hirako Farms and member of the Honokaa United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5 at Honokaa United Methodist Church for a 10 a.m celebration of life. Burial to follow at the Honokaa County Cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by sons, Victorino (Trinidad) Burton Jr., of Duarte, California, and James (Dorothy) Burton, of Pahoa; daughters, Norma (John) Devine, of North Hills, California, Mila Burton, of Paauhau, and Miriam (Walter) Poha, of Hilo; and nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Fannie Duhaylongsod

Fannie K. (Kaiawe) Duhaylongsod, 84, of Kealakekua, died April 24, 2017. Born March 19, 1933, in Kahaluu, she was retiree from the State of Hawaii.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. on Aug. 5 at Kahluu Beach Park for a celebration of life.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Ann Chatterley, of Lihue, Kauai, Lelene (Christian) Bay, of Keauhou; Rhoda Duhaylongsod, of Wailua, Kauai, and Dorean Duhaylongsod of Kapaa, Kauai; sister, Elizabeth Bannister, of Kealakekua; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
