WAIMEA — Last Thursday, with trade winds howling, crowds of flag waving Parker School students lined the walkway as members of the 2nd and 5th Marine Divisions made their way to their school auditorium, shaking hands and telling stories along the way.

    Ai Pono baskets filled with an assortment of fresh organic produce grown at Real Farm in Waikii Ranch are now available for $30 each. The weekly service can be picked up in Waimea on Fridays.

    The book, by local author Jan Wizinowich, is a collection of oral history interviews of Waimea natives who attended the original Waimea School building. They were done by Waimea Middle School students as part of an elective class.

    WAIMEA — Waimea Arts Council will host its annual New Artist Show from Jan. 4-27 in the front gallery of the Firehouse Gallery. The show introduces artists to the community who are new to the council but all already accomplished in their chosen medium.

    WAIMEA — Tamar Elias, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist, will present “Volcanic Air Pollution: The What, Where, and How of Vog in Hawaii” at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center on the Upper Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

    WAIMEA — Presented by The Kohala Center and sponsored by Kamehameha Schools, the weekly program offers middle school students opportunities to learn about the island’s native plants.

    Guest speaker Katherine de Kleer from UC Berkeley will present at the first event in the 2017 Astronomy Talk Series at Keck Observatory Headquarters in Waimea in the Hualalai Learning Theater at 7 p.m. The title is, “Geological Activity in The Solar System: New Discoveries and Unsolved Mysteries.”
