Parker School hosts alumni reunion

WAIMEA — More than 50 alumni, former faculty and current employees gathered for Parker School’s alumni reunion Aug. 6. Graduates and families from the class of 1984 through the class of 2016 came together to tour the school, reminisce through past yearbooks and catch up with one another on the school’s front porch.

    HONOKAA — Zhanelyn Cacho, a junior at Honokaa High School, came in first place in the state Hawaii HOSA competition on Oahu Feb. 23 and 24. She participated on the Kau team because Honokaa does not have their own chapter currently.

    WAIMEA — On March 11, Kokua Hawaii Foundation will deliver AINA In Schools training to cover standards-based garden curricula for grades K, 1, 4, and 5 at Kanu o ka Aina Learning Ohana in Waimea.

    Aolani Peiper, of Waikoloa, was selected to be a member of the Real Food Challenge team at Fort Lewis College’s Environmental Center. Peiper’s major is exercise science.

    NORTH HAWAII — Applications are now being accepted for the program’s spring cohort. Led by The Kohala Center, it allows students to learn more about farming, ranching, food production and sustainability through hands-on experience in organic and natural farming methods.

    WAIMEA — On Jan. 31 Parker School’s athletic field was named “The Goodfellow Brothers Inc. Athletic Field” in a school-wide dedication ceremony. It honored the 4th generation, family-owned construction company, Goodfellow Brothers Inc.

    Sarah Willey, class of 2017 at Connecticut College, has been named to the dean’s list for the 2016 fall semester, achieving dean’s high honors. The Kamuela resident is a biological sciences major.

    On Jan. 21, Matthew Kiyota of Kamuela graduated from Simpson University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Simpson University’s graduation ceremony was held in Redding, California, where the university is located.

Gov. Ige was Senate Ways and Means chair when funding was secured for the new educational asset and has worked closely with both Sen. Inouye and Rep. Evans to fund the project.

    WAIMEA — Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s drama club will present Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart,” winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize in drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Feb. 23-25 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center.

    HONOKAA — Seated in a circle on the floor around a large Hawaiian star compass, more than 25 Honokaa High School students listened intently on Tuesday morning as Imiloa Education Specialist Celeste Hao demonstrated how to find the horizon and establish direction using the position of the stars.

    WAIMEA — On Feb. 19 from 5-8 p.m. and Feb. 20 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Kahilu Theatre will host auditions for its upcoming production of “13 the Musical” — the only all-teenage cast to ever hit Broadway.

    WAIMEA — Parker School is proud to announce 10 students recognized regionally by the Scholastic Art Awards. They were selected out of more than 1,500 submissions in the state. Four of these students qualified to advance for national consideration.
