Parker students set new school speech and debate record

WAIMEA — Parker School qualified five students for the National Speech and Debate Tournament during the three-day Hawaii Speech and Debate State Tournament April 6-8 at Kamehameha and Punahou Schools on Oahu.

    WAIMEA — Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s drama club will present Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart,” winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize in drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Feb. 23-25 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center.

    HONOKAA — Seated in a circle on the floor around a large Hawaiian star compass, more than 25 Honokaa High School students listened intently on Tuesday morning as Imiloa Education Specialist Celeste Hao demonstrated how to find the horizon and establish direction using the position of the stars.

    WAIMEA — On Feb. 19 from 5-8 p.m. and Feb. 20 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Kahilu Theatre will host auditions for its upcoming production of “13 the Musical” — the only all-teenage cast to ever hit Broadway.

    WAIMEA — Parker School is proud to announce 10 students recognized regionally by the Scholastic Art Awards. They were selected out of more than 1,500 submissions in the state. Four of these students qualified to advance for national consideration.

    WAIMEA — This Saturday from 9 a.m.–3 p.m., Waimea Elementary School will host their own fair at Thelma Parker Gym. Residents, WES parents and teachers are invited to host their own booths at the event.

    WAIMEA — More than 600 students in grades K-12, parents and employees gathered in Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Castle Gym on Jan. 23 to celebrate the school’s Blue Zones Project Approved Status. The school achieved this milestone by completing the Blue Zones Project School Pledge.

    WAIMEA — Gregory Parks, an eighth grader at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 19 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.

    WAIMEA — Construction on the $16 million, 9-classroom STEAM building at Waimea Middle School is progressing, with much of the exterior nearly completed now. The 24,000-square-foot, two-story facility — including three science labs — is expected to be completed in May, with classes beginning this fall for the 2017-18 school year.

    WAIMEA — Parker School hosted the Speech and Debate Qualifying Neighbor Island Tournament (NIT) on Jan. 13 and 14. Eleven of the top teams in the state attended for the ninth time at Parker School.

    WAIMEA — Waimea Country School (WCS), Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) and Parker School — three independent, private schools in Waimea — have announced Feb. 6 as their common priority deadline for applications for the 2017-18 school year. The three schools have aligned due dates in an effort to simplify the process for families applying to multiple schools.

    WAIMEA — On Dec. 8, representatives from Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s upper school student council presented a gift of $500 to the North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) Cancer Center in support of breast cancer research.
