HONOKAA — Last Saturday, the Honokaa swimming pool hosted the Big Island Regional Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) competition.

    HONOKAA — This Thursday through Sunday, Honokaa High School Jazz Band will perform on Maui and Lanai to celebrate National Jazz Appreciation Month, which culminates in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) International Jazz Day on April 30.

    KOHALA COAST — Students from public, private, parochial and home schools all over the the island will test their knowledge tomorrow at the 28th Annual Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl. Held this year at Hapuna Beach Prince Resort, 21 five-member teams in grades 4-7 will compete beginning at 9:30 a.m.

    Waimea Elementary School’s Thrift Shop will hold their final sale of the school year tomorrow from 8 a.m.-noon. They have a wide variety of items — new and like-new — starting at 25 cents for all ages, sizes and styles. Infant and children’s clothing, ladies jackets, slacks, shorts, dresses, bathing suits and shoes are included. Men’s shirts and pants, kitchen appliances and household items are also available.

    On March 29-31 and April 1 and 2, Waimea Elementary School will host the reading event, open to the public between 2:30-5:30 p.m. in room P1, next to the outdoor basketball court. A selection of engaging and affordable books will be available for every reading level. All purchases benefit the school.
