On June 13, 1950, Honolulu was suddenly blanketed by the thickest haze seen since recordkeeping began there in 1906. Interestingly, the haze was first noticed four days earlier at Johnston Island, 800 miles southwest of Oahu, and then on June 12 at Wake Island, 1,500 miles west-southwest. The total area covered by the dense haze layer was estimated to be 1.2 million square miles.

The automobile takes a lot of criticism, some of it deserved. Yes, they consume fossil fuels and contribute to air pollution, but engineers are working on that and things have gotten much better. The worrisome criticism is the number of fatalities and injuries. It’s not as safe as airlines, but then Island Air does not come to my door. Not quite as safe as buses that only pass my community six times a day (or not) and seldom go where I need to. What if I need to go to three places or 10? Think of the things you could not do without your car.
