HONOLULU — The top rail executive on Oahu is declining a $35,000 bonus this year.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper reports Dan Grabauskas asked the board of directors of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation on Thursday to skip consideration of the annual performance bonus that he’s eligible to receive.
The action comes as the rail transit project under Grabauskas’ watch is facing cash shortfalls.
The project, which faces as much as a $910 million budget gap, also has faced intense scrutiny and calls by the public to look for cost-saving measures.
The rail board accepted the request to forgo the bonus.
Grabauskas became director in April 2012. He has received two yearly $35,000 bonuses.
