Violet Kaiawe

Violet Tok Soonie Kaiawe, 95, of Hawi died Feb. 20, 2014, at Kohala Hospital. Born April 14, 1918, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker, 4-H club leader and member of the university extension and Kuikahi Baptist Church. She was a newspaper correspondent for the former Hilo Tribune Herald and she wrote a weekly column, “Kaiawe Commentary.” She also wrote an autobiography and worked at Project Learn in Kohala, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 1 at Landmark Baptist Church at 54-3668 Akoni Pule Highway in Honomakau for an 11:30 a.m. service. Burial will be at the Hawi county cemetery. Lunch follows at Jodo Mission Hall in Hawi. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by daughters, Alberta (William) Bekgaard of California, Carol (Dennis) Gonsalves and Ruth (Richard) Perreira both of Hilo, Juliet (Robert) White of Hawi; brothers, Benjamin Chang of California, Joseph (Betty) Chang of Halaula; sisters, Florence Brown of Honolulu, Betty Trawick and Leina (Ernest) Begley, both of North Dakota; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Sarah Kahee

Sarah ann Iwalani Kahee, 49, of Hilo died Feb. 17, 2014, at home. Born in Hilo, she was an employee at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. March 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a visitation. Cremation follows. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by sons, John Iopa and Jake Iopa both of Puna; daughters, Tierry Roboman of Colorado, Samantha Iopa of Puna; brothers, George Kahee of Washington, Harry Kahee and Kihei Kahee, both of Oregon; sister, Aisha Kahee of Oregon; stepmother, Rhonda Kahee of Oregon; five grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ellen Kubo

Ellen Keiko Kubo, 75, of Hilo died Feb. 1, 2014, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born July 17, 1938, in Papaikou, she was a retired clerk for the state Department of Transportation and a retired secretary for the former U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. March 4 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. A committal service will be held at noon March 5 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn. Lei and flowers are welcome.

She is survived by son, Dean Kubo of Hilo; daughter, Gwen Kubo of Honolulu; brothers, Harry Matsuo, Kenneth (Janet) Matsuo, Leabert (Patricia) Matsuo and Harold (Karen) Matsuo, all of Hilo; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kamahao Judalena

Kamahao Kahanu ola Judalena, 4 months, of Pahala died Feb. 14, 2014, at Ka‘u Hospital. He was born on Oct. 7, 2013, in Honolulu.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 7 at River of Life Assembly of God in Pahala for a 10 a.m. service followed by a memorial cruise. Luncheon follows at 1 p.m. at The Club House in Pahala. For information, call 928-8187 or 494-8997.

Agnes Kelii

Agnes “Aggie” Namuo Kelii, 96, of Waikoloa died Feb. 22, 2014, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born April 22, 1917, in Kailua-Kona, she was a room maid at the former Kona Inn Hotel, a maid and cook for the Wall family and member of ILWU and Lanakila Congregational Church.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. March 7 at Lanakila Congregational Church in Kainaliu for a 3 p.m. service. Burial follows in the church’s cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara (Gordon) Palmer of Waikoloa, Jeanette Apiki of Honolulu, Frances (David) Hudson of Maui; son, William Kelii of Honolulu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Frances Provance

Frances Provance, 91, of Ocean View died Feb. 22, 2014. Born May 5, 1922, in Ambridge, Pa., she was a volunteer and former waitress.

She is survived by daughter, Marlis Provance of Ocean View; son, Philip (Pui) Provance of Ocean View; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

James Taren

James Arthur Taren, 89, of Waimea died Feb. 21, 2014. Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, he served in the U.S. military and later worked as a neurosurgeon.

He is survived by wife, Suzy Chen.

Narako Kunimoto

Narako Kunimoto, 95, of Papaikou died Feb. 11, 2014, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Jan. 11, 1919, in Onomea, she was a retired maintenance worker from I. Kitagawa &Co. Ltd. in Hilo and member of the Papaikou Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Kalaoa Kumiai and Papaikou Senior Citizens Club.

Private services were held. Family requests no flowers or monetary gifts.

She is survived by sons, Calvin (Gloria) Kunimoto of Cerritos, Calif., Earl (Yvonne) Kunimoto of Hilo, Melvin (Diane) Kunimoto of Papaikou; daughter, Pearl (Sidney) Yanabu of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Shimako Kunishi of Papaikou, Kiyoko Okahara of Honolulu; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Leon Muresan

Leon Andrew Muresan, 62, of Hilo died Feb. 16, 2014, at his residence. Born in Bolton, England, he was a retired water treatment operator for the state of California.

He is survived by wife, Vicki Muresan of Hilo; son, Brandon (Kimberly) Muresan of California; daughter, Faith Muresan of California; brother, Alec Muresan of California; sisters, Vanda Moore and Sylvia Pani, both of Nevada.

Roy Pang

Roy Mun Leong Pang, 74, of Hilo died Feb. 20, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired electrical engineer for the National Aeronauticsl &Space Administration.

He is survived by stepdaughter, Francine (Samuel) Sharp of Texas; brother, Floyd (B.J.) Pang Ching of Hilo; sisters, Rosaline (Sam) Chun of Hilo, Roberta (Bert) Pieffer of Utah; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
