Kumu from across the state are sharing their knowledge, skills and passion for weaving with students of all ages this week at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
They are part of the 19th annual Lauhala Conference, organized by Ka Ulu Lauhala o Kona. This nonprofit benevolent organization was founded in 1995 by master lauhala weaver Elizabeth Maluihi Lee. The mission is to “perpetuate, preserve and ensure the growth of the traditional art of lauhala weaving.”
The conference, which ends Saturday, features several weaving workshops, a dinner with a silent auction and fashion show, and a craft fair.
