DLNR plans meetings on sea level rise vulnerability, adaptation
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is planning two public information meetings on Hawaii Island on sea level rise vulnerability and adaptation.
The first meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi St. The second meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the West Hawaii Civic Center Council Chambers, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, in Kailua-Kona.
The DLNR said climate change has the potential to profoundly impact our well-being and way of life. In particular, rising sea levels will increase the occurrence and severity of coastal erosion and flooding, threatening coastal communities and natural resources concentrated along low-lying shores.
The meetings are part of a statewide effort by the DLNR to educate people about the impacts of sea level rise and to gather comments and input about key issues and concerns regarding preparedness and adaptation. Meetings have been held on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
“We are in the process of developing a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability and Adaptation Report (SLR Report) that is to be submitted in anticipation of the 2018 Hawaii State Legislature, and we are interested in soliciting input from our island communities to help us complete the report,” said DLNR Chairwoman Suzanne Case.

AdvoCATS to celebrate Homeless Animals’ Day
AdvoCATS will be celebrating International Homeless Animals’ Day at the Kailua-Kona Walmart from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday.
Unite with animal advocates from around the globe to shed light on pet overpopulation and the spay/neuter solution. There will be a booth with information on what AdvoCATS does, as well as information about community (also known as feral) cats, how to humanely bring down the homeless cat population, and answers to questions you might have and more.
AdvoCATS will also be collecting cat food and donations to help feeders with costs. The group is also seeking volunteers to help in a variety of capacities including feeding, clinics, public outreach, education and support.
AdvoCATS is a nonprofit that works to help solve the cat overpopulation problem humanely through free spay/neuter services with a licensed veterinarian. The group has spayed or neutered 20,000 cats since its founding in 1999.

in Recovery to meet
Food Addicts in Recovery meets at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 at Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako St., in Kailua-Kona.
The weekly meeting will feature a guest speaker from Oahu.
Food Addicts in Recovery is a program based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins at meetings.
