DLNR planning hearings on parking fees, thrill craft rules
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold public hearings on the proposed amendments to Title 13, Hawaii Administrative Rules, as they pertain to vehicle parking fees and thrill craft education requirements occurring in state small boat harbors, facilities and nearshore waters. Section 13-233-26 clarifies that vehicle parking rates will be set at either equal to or less than established state or county rates in the county where the parking fees are applied and Section 13-256-16 clarifies that the thrill craft education requirement meets the mandatory education requirement of Section 13-244-15.5 as long as the person only operates thrill craft.
The meetings will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Kealakehe Intermediate School cafeteria in Kailua-Kona and at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the State Office Building conference rooms A and B in Hilo.
All interested parties are invited to attend and present their views, either orally or in writing. Those wanting to provide oral testimony must sign in at the meeting, which will conclude after the last oral testimony is received. Written statements may be submitted at the public hearing or to the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation at 333 Queen St., Suite 300, Honolulu, HI 96813, prior to the hearing date.
The rules can be reviewed online at dlnr.hawaii.gov/dobor/draft-rules or in person at any small boat harbor from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays. If unable to review online or in person, a copy can be mailed upon verbal or written request to the division’s Honolulu office, which can be reached at 587-3254.

The Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Moku O Kohala, in partnership with the Kailapa Community Association are advancing the reinstitution of the Hawaiian Independence Day by hosting a public informational event from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea.

Senior falls campaign coming to Kona
The state Department of Health and the Hawaii Fall Prevention Consortium in collaboration with AARP, KTA Superstores, Foodland Supermarkets, Times Supermarkets, Mina Pharmacies and the Hawaii Community Pharmacy Association are sponsoring the statewide Senior Fall Prevention Awareness Campaign, and are bringing their presentation and a Tai Chi for Health Instructor workshop to Kona from Friday through July 13.
The “Senior Falls Are Preventable” presentation featuring Stan Michaels, fall prevention specialist from the Department of Health, will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Community Hale. He will outline simple steps people can take to prevent falls, and will also show educational videos on fall prevention. Included will be a complete description of the Big Island free medication reviews and balance testing being conducted by KTA Superstores and Foodland pharmacies.
Also featured at the Friday program will be Ileina Ferrier, master trainer from the Tai Chi for Health Institute. She will provide an interactive, audience participation demonstration of tai chi. Ferrier is one of 21 master trainers in the United States. This style of tai chi is the basis for the instructor workshops she will lead Saturday and July 13 at Kona Community Hospital. The tai chi workshops focus on training instructors to help prevent falls among older adults.

Kona Orchid Society discusses cymbidiums
The Kona Orchid Society will meet at 6 p.m. Friday at the Bridge Building at the former Hualalai Academy.
Bob Harris of orchidpeople@gmail.com will speak about cymbidiums. He will also bring plants to sell, including pre-orders. A potluck will be held at 6:15 p.m. Bring a dish to share. Members may also bring a blooming orchid to discuss during show and tell.
