Hospital auxiliary commends volunteers
In observation of National Volunteer Week, April 6 through 12, Kona Community Hospital invites the public to recognize volunteers who make a difference in the community.
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary is the largest volunteer organization at the hospital with 65 volunteers. Volunteers gave more than 7,600 hours to the hospital last year. Ongoing volunteer roles include the new Falling Star Volunteer Safety Program, help in the cancer center’s infusion department, skilled nursing unit, the business office and same day surgery. Volunteers also coordinate the gift shop, Friday bake sale and the annual holiday house and rummage sale.
Funds are primarily raised to support the nursing scholarships. This successful program helps area students become nurses in hopes that they will stay in the community to work.
In addition to the Auxiliary, the Kona Hospital Volunteer Chaplain Association includes ministers of all denominations who provide regular visits to offer spiritual care, a listening ear or a message of hope to patients and families.
Zumbathon
scheduled Friday
Katie Moore of Katie Moore Fitness is hosting a Zumbathon from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kona International Market, 74-5533 Luhia St., Kailua-Kona. More than 17 Big Island instructors will lead a “Together We Dance to Cure ALS” benefit where 100 percent of the proceeds will go to MDA’s Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Tickets are $15 and may be purchased in advance or at the door. Comfortable clothing is recommended and those participating should bring plenty of water.

Workshop explores plants used in hula
Ab Kawainohoikalai Valencia and Tim Tunison will lead the field seminar “Plants of Hula: Na Mea Kanu o Ka Hula” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Participants meet at Kilauea Visitor Center. Program cost is $45 for Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park members and $65 for nonmembers. Students with valid identification are $25.
