Caregiver class offered
To help family caregivers cope with the demands of caring for their loved ones, Hawaii Community Caregiver Network (HCCN) is sponsoring a free Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) class series beginning Saturday and continuing every Saturday until May 7. Classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at Kona Adult Day Center, 81-989 Halekii St., Kealakekua.
Family caregivers will learn self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and health care or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.
Attendance is required at all six classes. A $25 deposit for course materials will be collected at the first class and refunded upon completion of the six-week series.
Formed in 1995, HCCN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization in West Hawaii.

Girl Scouts seek items to distribute to homeless women
The Junior Scouts of Girl Scout Troop 2028 are working toward their bronze award by distributing “blessing bags.”
The scouts are accepting donations of gently worn purses, and they will fill them with personal hygiene items and feminine hygiene products to distribute to homeless women.
The girls will set up a table at Walmart from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday to collect items for the bags. A list of requested items will be available.
Purses will be filled on Monday.
Free course helps families cope with mental illness
Big Island volunteers will sponsor a National Alliance on Mental Illness Family-to-Family Education Program for families of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness.
The series of classes will start Saturday in the St. Joseph’s Church meeting room, 43 Kapiolani Street in Hilo. Each weekly class will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the series ends May 7. Schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression,) panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, co-occurring brain and addictive disorders will be covered.

Faith-based college prep course planned
A faith-based college prep course is planned at Grace Community Church in Kailua-Kona.
Topics covered include change and stress, time management, finances and debt and worldview. The class meets from 11:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the four Sundays in April. The class is free.
