The Kona Historical Society Portuguese stone oven baking crew will be put a traditional whole egg into each loaf of bread it bakes Thursday to celebrate Easter.
The public is invited to join the process of panning the dough and baking close to 100 loaves of the traditional sweet, white and whole wheat bread from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The program is free and the bread is $8 per loaf, first come, first served. Bread sales begin around 12:30 p.m. until sold out.

Science talk focuses on reducing mosquito population
Kona Science Cafe presents citizen science and an engineering response to dengue fever from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St.
Van Eden, PhD, will describe how he has reverse engineered a number of commercial and research mosquito traps to enable anyone to make traps using relatively safe chemicals and containers such as jars or buckets. Info: makemosquitotraps.org.
Eden will also describe a citizen science project run by Prof. Durrell Kapan at the California Academy of Sciences, which is designed to collect geo-referenced presence data for mosquito species on Hawaii Island. Using this data, Kapan and his team can run computer models that use information about human and mosquito population distributions, weather, geography, etc. to predict where the highest risk areas are for the spread of diseases like dengue. Volunteers are needed.
A potluck is included. Attendees should bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share.
All are welcome and admission is free.

Informational kiosk dedicated in Naalehu
Dedication of a kiosk recently erected at Naalehu Town Park by the Ka‘u Scenic Byway Committee will be held at 2 p.m Monday. Councilwoman Maile David and former councilwoman Brenda Ford, along with others who contributed to the creation of this kiosk, will attend.
The kiosk is a joint venture of area businesses and property owners, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Department of Transportation, Hawaii County, The Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka‘u and other local organizations.
Funds for the fabrication of the kiosk were provided by Ford and the Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department. Volunteers from O Ka‘u Kakou installed it. The three panels on the kiosk display maps and photos of the Byway and the Naalehu area, historical photos and stories.
