Classified FAQ

How can I find archived classified ads?

We do not archive past classified ads online at westhawaiitoday.com. If you know the date of the paper, you can contact our circulation department to request a back issue to locate the past classified ad there. Circulation can be reached at 808-327-1652.

I'm trying to research foreclosure notices. Where can I find these?

West Hawaii Today does not post foreclosure notices online on the westhawaiitoday.com web site. If you are interested in researching foreclosure notices, you may either contact our Circulation Department at 808-327-1652 for information about available back issues up to 2 months out, or you have the option of visiting the References section of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Their phone number is 808-327-4327.

I get a security certificate warning when placing my classified ad online.

The reason you are getting the certificate message is because it is a self signed certificate by the paper and not a company like Verisign. You can safely accept the certificate and you will find it creates a secure lock and all information sent is encrypted.

e-Edition FAQ

What is the e-Edition?

The e-Edition is the complete content of your local paper in an easy-to-read digital format. The e-Edition is laid out just like the print edition of the paper, including all photographs, illustrations, and advertisements. It is a PDF version of the paper displayed in a Flash module.

What are the major differences between the HTML and electronic versions of the newspaper?

The HTML paper presents content in a format much like a conventional web site, while the e-Edition preserves the look and feel of the printed paper. The HTML paper may appeal more to people accustomed to reading online news material, where the e-Edition may appeal more to people accustomed to the traditional layout of a printed newspaper. While the HTML paper is convenient and free, it lacks many of the features only available in either our print or e-Edition, including:

  • Entire content of articles, columns, crosswords, etc.
  • Special inserts to local retailers.
  • Full access to all print advertisments, many of which offer special discounts and deals.

Can I read the e-Edition offline, such as during a train or plane ride?

The e-Edition can be read offline only if you download it to your computer. The drawback to doing this is that the PDF documents will take up space on your machine. To take advantage of the e-Edition's full usability, we recommend reading it with a live internet connection which is at times not allowed on certain modes of transportation. To learn how to download a PDF of the e-Edition, please see the question "How do I save article text and/or pictures?" below.

Can I read e-Edition on a mobile device like iPad or an e-reader like Kindle?

At this time, we do not support optimum functionality of e-Edition on mobile devices and e-readers. e-Edition does serve to iPhone and iPad devices as a JPEG image, which limits how closely you can zoom in. On other mobile devices, e-Edition serves as text. Some e-readers like Kindle and Kobo support PDF files, as well as iPads, and newer-generation iPhones and iPods. The e-Edition can be downloaded as a PDF file to your computer and then transferred to these devices. To learn how to download a PDF of the e-Edition, please see the question "How do I save article text and/or pictures?" below. Please reference your mobile device or e-reader's instruction manual to learn how to transfer PDF files to your device.

How do I get access to the e-Edition?

The e-Edition is available on a subscription basis. Please see our subscription rates for options and details or call our Circulation Department at 808-327-1652 with your questions.

Can I get single copies of the e-Edition?

At this time, we do not offer single copy sales of the e-Edition.

How much does a subscription cost if I cancel my printed paper?

If you cancel your printed paper and retain your electronic paper subscription, the cost will be the full current rate of the e-Edition.

What are the system requirements?

e-Edition requires an internet connection. Your system setup should have a Single Core CPU 2.0 GHz, or Dual Core CPU 1.5 GHz or higher and it should have 512 MB or more RAM. e-Edition will work on any operating system with a supported browser and Flash Player 10.0 or later.

How do I go directly to a specific page?

Underneath the copy of the newspaper, there is a tool bar. In the left-hand corner of your e-Edition tool bar, you will find three separate icons. Hovering your mouse over these icons will show you there is a Table of Contents, Bookmarks and Thumbnails. If you prefer to navigate the paper by a Table of Contents, click the Table of Contents icon. If you prefer to navigate by small visual indicators of the pages, click the Thumbnails icon. You will then be able to click on the page you desire to view.

How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?

The full page display, even at largest size, is only meant as a preview for navigation purposes. To read the text, use the zoom settings to zoom in on the page to the article, ad or other content you wish to read.

How do I save article text and/or pictures?

Click the "Download" icon in the bottom tool bar. You will download the full PDF of the e-Edition to your desktop. Be aware that such content is subject to copyright law and can only be used with permission. It is unlawful, for example, to copy an article or picture from the e-Edition and print it in a newsletter or post it on a blog.

I can't read the text in some ads.

If the ads used a small font when they were created they maybe unreadable. However you may be able to zoom in on the text and make it out (see the reference graphic under "How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?" above). If the text was made as a graphic, which may happen in ads, the text may remain unreadable, even when zoomed in.

Can I use my dial-up service to read the e-Edition? Is the speed useable?

Yes, however you may notice that the download time is considerably longer than that of a high speed internet connection. We recommend using a dial-up connection speed of at least 56.6k.

Why can't I see the e-Edition?

Please make sure you have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed. e-Edition requires Flash Player 10.0 or higher. If you require assistance with installing the Flash Player, please contact Adobe's Help Center.

I'm having problems printing articles or images from the e-Edition.

The only way to print articles or images from the e-Edition is to first download the PDF version by clicking the "Download" icon in the bottom tool bar (see "How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?" above). e-Edition will be saved to your machine as a PDF file, thus it is viewed through Adobe Acrobat Reader. Because of the original size of the PDF files, which are the same size as the full-scale print edition (11.5 inches by 22.5 inches), when you are attempting to print a page, you are limited to the print settings Adobe Acrobat Reader provides. Most personal printers print on 8.5 x 11 inch paper, and a full newspaper page would be difficult or impossible to read when scaled down to fit on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

For more information on printing large-scale PDFs, please see your Adobe Acrobat Reader's "Help" menu, or visit Adobe's Help Center.

Note that some solutions may require you to save a copy of the PDF document to your desktop in order to view the full Reader menu which may be inaccessible if being viewed in your web browser.

Why is the e-Edition running so slow?

Your e-Edition is what is commonly referred to as "rich content." To provide you with this content, we need to download a lot more data to your browser than many other web pages would require.

Loading time will depend greatly on the speed of your Internet connection and the amount of other traffic on the Internet routers between our servers and you.

Know that there are many factors that could be contributing to slow loading times:

  • You are running an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Make sure you have installed the latest version of the plug-in.
  • Your ISP's servers could be experiencing a brief period of slowdowns.
  • Our host server could be experiencing a brief period of slowdowns.

If you continue to experience slow loading times after a period of a couple days, please contact the Circulation Department at 808-327-1652 with your concerns.

I can't log in to e-Edition. What's wrong?

You must type your Member ID and Password exactly the same way every time you are asked to log in. Please double-check the account number and password you were supplied by our Circulation Department when you subscribed. It is a common mistake at times for subscribers to enter their password in the username field and vice versa. Make sure you enter your account number and password in the correct fields.

Some e-Edition subscribers have set up a free user account for general access to westhawaiitoday.com in order to participate in posting comments to stories. This username cannot be used to access paid e-Edition subscriptions. If you are currently logged in with your free general westhawaiitoday.com user account, you will not be given access to log in to e-Edition until you log out of your general user account. Please log out of your general user account before attempting to log in to access e-Edition.

General Web FAQ

I'm having trouble logging in to post comments.

1. You have entered a NEW user name and password yet you still cannot post comments:

It is possible that you might be trying to log in with a user name that is already in use. Our system is set up to alert you if this is the case, however, we have found some web browsers fail to show this alert message when the error occurs. Create a login in with a different user name than what you have been currently trying. A good example is using your first initial with your last name, and possibly your birth year or another number you can remember. Once you've created a unique user name, you will receive a confirmation email and you should be able to log in to post to our blogs.

Another possible issue is your email's SPAM filter might be catching the confirmation email coming from westhawaiitoday.com. Please make sure your email is set to accept emails from westhawaiitoday.com so you can receive your confirmation email to complete the login process. Once you receive the confirmation email, follow the instructions in the emailed response and click the link to finalize the login process. Your login will not be active until you click the link in the email. Once you do this, you will be asked to log in the next time you want to post to the blogs - simply click the "login" link under the blogs and enter your confirmed login information and you will be able to post comments on the web site. There is also the possibility that you may have mis-typled your email address.

2. You have already created a user account and have been able to post comments in the past with this login information:

Please remember your Member ID and Password fields are case-sensitive. Check to make sure your Caps Lock key is not on. You must type your Member ID and Password exactly the same way every time you are asked to log in. Upper- and lower-case letters, number and symbols have to be the same as when you entered them when you registered.

How do I create a new login ID?

NOTE: It is against West Hawaii Today's rules of engagement to post with mulitple IDs to our comments section. Please be mindful of this if you're choosing to create a new account to post under multiple screen names. All accounts will be banned if this occurs.

If you are currently logged in with the old ID you no longer wish to use, click the "log out" link in the upper-right corner of the site. Now click the "register" link in the upper-right corner and follow the prompts. Make sure to watch for the confirmation email. Your account will not be activated until you click the link in the confirmation email.

Why can't I find a specific news story online?

We do not guarantee that all stories that are in the newspaper will be run online.

Currently, the only way to assure that you can catch all the news stories in our newspaper from a given day is to purchase that day's newspaper or subscribe to our home delivery or e-Edition service(s). Contact our circulation department for information on purchasing a newspaper at 808-327-1652.
