HONOLULU — A Waikiki man has been sentenced to nearly 5 years in prison for stealing food stamps and other government benefits.

Kevin Halverson, who was born with the name Vaughn Sherwood, was sentenced on Wednesday to 57 months in prison along with 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $213,000 in restitution.

Halverson admitting to using various identities to illegally receive benefits such as medical care and student tuition assistance. He changed his name in 1999.

He says he is sorry and stole the benefits because it became easy to do.

Prosecutors say he didn’t disclose assets including a Mercedes-Benz, a sailboat and an inheritance of more than $300,000, which would have made him ineligible for government assistance.
