May 7, 1984: Miss Kona Coffee Francesca Gomes is among 11 women who will vie for the 1984 “Miss Hawaii” crown. Gomes competes May 16 for more than $68,000 in scholarships and the opportunity to represent Hawaii in the Miss America Pageant.

May 7, 2004: A resolution passed by the Hawaii County Council this week tells the administration to get on with selecting a waste technology vendor for East Hawaii’s trash and not spend public money on a sort station in Hilo. Council members voted 6-3 to support the resolution that also specifies the county should pursue a private vendor to build the sort station planned for East Hawaii.
