HONOLULU — State Sen. Sam Slom is asking the state to provide information on more than $200 million in federal grants it received to set up Hawaii’s health insurance marketplace.
Slom sent a letter to the Department of Health seeking copies of grant applications and other documents.
He says he will ask the U.S. Government Accountability Office to investigate the how the money was spent if he doesn’t receive answers.
Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo says the department didn’t administer the grants.
The senator said Thursday the Hawaii Health Connector had an unrealistic business plan and was fatally flawed from the beginning. He says changing personnel or giving it more money won’t solve its problems.
The GAO earlier this month agreed to look into problems with state health exchange websites around the country.
