Man ordered to forfeit $100K he tried to smuggle

HONOLULU — A Honolulu cafe owner who tried to smuggle $100,000 out of Hawaii has been ordered to forfeit the money.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor also ordered Yen Chang Su to serve three years of probation.

Su owns Taste Tea, a popular cafe on Kapiolani Boulevard. He’s also a citizen of Taiwan attending graduate school in California.

A customs officer in August stopped Su at Honolulu Airport as he prepared to board a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Taiwan.

Su declared that he was carrying $9,500. A pat-down search revealed seven bundles of cash in the front and back of Su’s underwear.

Su pleaded guilty in November. He said he wrapped the money around his body to smuggle it to Taiwan to avoid paying taxes.
