Two earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.0 rattled West Hawaii late Thursday and early Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports.
The first earthquake, a magnitude-3.1, occurred at 10:54 p.m. Thursday about 4.7 miles west of Kawaihae in South Kohala, officials said. It had a registered depth of 17.3 miles and was reported felt by about a dozen residents in the South and North Kohala districts.
The second earthquake had a magnitude of 3.7 and occurred at 12:22 a.m. Friday, according to officials. It was centered about 2.8 miles north-northeast of Kailua-Kona and had a registered depth of 8.4 miles.
By early Friday afternoon, more than 200 people had reported feeling the temblor to the USGS. The majority of the reports, 165, came from the Kailua-Kona area. The earthquake was felt as far away as Honolulu.
