Big Island police arrest 32 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 32 drivers for suspected drunken driving between June 16 and Sunday; five were involved in traffic accidents; two were younger than age 21.

Police have made 600 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 609 during the same period in 2013, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 14 motorists while Kona officers arrested seven. South Kohala and Puna officers arrested five motorists in each district, according to police. Ka’u officers arrested one driver.

There have been 737 major accidents this year compared with 663 during the same period in 2013. To date, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways compared with 18 at this time in 2013. To date, three of the fatalities has been attributed to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol, according to police.
