The Friends of the Libraries, Kona is hosting their free family Read Aloud Program, "Books are Building Blocks," from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5th at the Kailua Kona Public Library. During this school year, participants are traveling around the world and getting their “passports” stamped each month as we explore the world through reading. Join us for this entertaining and informative program to encourage family literacy. Our Passport this month takes us to the Emerald City and the wonderful Wizard of Oz. The classic story by L.L. Baum is being brought to life at the Aloha Theatre and some of the cast members will be present to share their experiences of bringing Oz to life in Kona. Meet the actors who portray the Cowardly Lion, the Mayor of Munchkin Land, and the Wicked Witch.

Parents must attend the program with their children. There are separate reading groups: Kindergarten, grades 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and a Parent group. Each group has a person reading aloud to them, followed by a discussion of what was read.

Registration will take place from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. in front of the library, monthly program from 5:00 to 5:30 PM, and Reading by Age Group from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. Afterward, the families will meet on the lanai for light refreshments, door prizes, and books. Participation is limited to seventy five participants.
