Papermaking is an ancient art and One Island’s ‘Same Canoe’ sustainable living programs are showing us that papermaking is also an excellent way to really enjoy a hands-on green lifestyle. While the Egyptians made paper from papyrus reeds and the Maya continue to make amate paper much as they did in ancient times, here in Hawaii artist Susan O’Malley teaches how to turn many of our local plant fibers into wonderful paper products. Including the Arts in green living learning programs is a hallmark of One Island’s work and these papermaking workshops are a great opportunity to really touch and feel natural materials that you can turn into useful, beautiful, green gifts and products.
The next papermaking workshop comes to Honaunau On November 23rd and 24th at One Island’s sustainable learning center. Registration is available online at www.oneisland.org or by email to email@example.com.
