In July of 2012, the unveiling of the Hilo Town Artwalk and First Friday was welcomed with open arms by the community of Hilo - and has been in communion ever since.
Formed by a handful of artists, organizers, business owners and enthusiasts, the First Friday monthly event, is a grassroots collaboration - glued together by the soul and hard work of the people.
Housed at The Hilo Town Tavern in specific, First Friday boasts a steady stream of local musicians, visual artists and entertainers that breathe a new life into a barren Hilo nightlife. Bringing together various forms of culture and a cornucopia of nationalities - under one positive and stimulating tent - is the aim and mission of First Friday.
Credited with the organization and legwork for the event - Good Times promotions and Open Temple Media Group - are a team comprised of artists and entrepreneurs - focused on delivery a quantity and quality of nightlife not yet present in the beautiful town of Hilo. With a powerful lineup of musicians, a newly remodeled art gallery, live painting, a fluent crowd and themed nights every First Friday - the event is steamrolling its way to solidarity.
The next event falls in conjunction with Hilo's long running and successful annual event Black n White Night. First Friday will also be celebrating Hip Hop History Month, a globally recognized holiday, with a fresh lineup of Bboys, Djs, Graffiti Writers, and Emcees, to represent the four main elements of Hip Hop culture. Free Family Friendly activities will be held from 6-9 pm followed by the nighttime event- both in and outdoors until 2am.
Good Times Promotions is Issa Hilweh and Dan Madsen of Oasis SkateShop.
Open Temple is Phreewil, Dena Nakahashi, Dj Soda X, Open Hands, Kapena Boyd, and Jerry Burns.
