John R.K. Clark, author of the new University of Hawai`i Press book Hawaiian Surfing Traditions from the Past will present a free Hanohano `O Kona program on the history of Hawaiian Surfing. Clark, a former lifeguard and firefighter, will describe six surf sports practiced by native Hawaiians. This is the March portion of the Hanohano `O Kona-Honoring Kona community lecture series for 2013 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike.
