Saturday, June 10th, 2017 Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hamakua 10:00am - Pau Carving out kua / Making Kamani & Kukui oil Bring kamani & kukui nuts & 1 big chunk of wood no less than 4" × 4" × 20"- 24" for your kua kapa. The Kua can be of a lighter wood, but not too light because it has to hold up to alot of beating & when you strike it with the i’e kuku, you will truly wish it to have a pleasing sound. Historically, we have used Maple, robusta & Milo. Included will be instruction on the making of kukui and kamani oil for the kapa and conditioning of the finished tools. We will supply the belt sander, chop saw, orbital sander, chisels, hammers, saws,& clamps. If any of these supplies are on hand, please feel welcome to bring those along. Class cost: $20-60 suggested donation (plus $5 supply fee paid directly to instructor)
