Guided Birding and Photography Tours
The Friends of Hakalau Forest (FOHF) are offering personally guided birding and photography tours of the lower portion of the Pua Akala tract of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. This remote area is seldom seen by the public and provides habitat for the highest populations of native and endangered forest birds and plants on the Big Island. Birding tours will be led by professional guides Jack Jeffrey and Rob Pacheco and the nature photography tour will be led by Rob Shallenberger. The tours will be held in conjunction with Hakalau Forest NWR’s Open House on April 19, 2014 but will leave the Pua Akala barn at 8:30 a.m. which is ½ hour before the refuge gates are opened to the general public. Cost is $50 per person for members of FOHF. Non-members will be charged an additional $25 to cover their cost of membership for one year. Pacheco’s tours will include transportation to the Refuge from the Hawaii Forest & Trail headquarters in Kailua Kona for an extra $25. Funds will go toward the Jack Jeffrey Conservation Education Fund and FOHF’s general fund. For more information and to sign up for a tour, send an email with your phone number to firstname.lastname@example.org. Tour participants must also make reservations to attend the April 19 no-cost Open House at Hakalau Forest NWR. Call the refuge office at (808) 443-2300 for more information and to sign up for the Open House.
