Words and Wine Tuesday
Sandra E. Bonura, Robert Frutos, Michael Foley and Peggy Barnes Budd will be featured during Kona Stories’ Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.
Bonura is the author of “Light in the Queen’s Garden: Ida May Pope, Pioneer for Hawaii’s Daughters, 1862-1914,” an historical account of a woman from the heartland of America who landed in the Kingdom of Hawaii at the end of the 19th century.
An acclaimed and internationally known author, Frutos will be sharing a taste of his many books, with a focus on his Big Island guide books. Frutos has written on a wide range of subjects based on his in-depth knowledge and experiences of the Big Island.
“Happiness is a Choice: The Art of Soulful Living” is his newest book, which affords opportunity and time-proven techniques toward creating and bringing more and more real and lasting joy into your life.
Foley, a Hawi resident, is the author of “Hair of the Barista.” In the book, the author sets out to bridge the seen and the unseen around the old sugar plantation towns he calls home, where the questions and conflicts of self, other, and the world of headlines demand attention in the midst of beauty.
Alice Barnes is the author of “Alice Barnes: American Activist,” a book first published in 1982 to celebrate Barnes’ 75th birthday, that has recently been reprinted. This reissued, revised volume is of special interest to individuals and organizations that value social justice. Her daughter, Barnes Budd, will present her book and speak about her mother’s life.
The event opens with an informal meet and greet that merges into a more formal book presentation from each author. It concludes with a Q&A session.

author pens new title
Local author and illustrator Gill McBarnet is releasing her 15th childrens book, “The Magical Journey from Hawaii” in time for the holidays.
The book tells the story of Koa and Kanani, who create a beautiful bird who flies them to faraway lands. They marvel at many different places they visit all over the world, but when they return to Hawaii they are grateful for the familiarity of their island home.
McBarnet was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa. She and her Hawaii-raised husband Terry moved to Maui in 1983 where she wrote her first children’s book about whales.
With a background in both teaching and publishing in Zimbabwe, she has applied these skills to writing, illustrating and publishing the 14 books she has written to date. Among her titles are the bestseller “The Goodnight Gecko.”
