Fiction book group to discuss ‘Gentleman in Moscow’
Kona Stories hosts a fiction book club discussing “Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles on Tuesday.
The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the store. Book groups are free if books are purchased at Kona Stories, or a $5 donation is requested.
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

North Kohala Public Library’s book group meets at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Kapaau.

Book-signing event comes to North Kohala
Locally published coffee table book, “Aloha Expressionism by Contemporary Hawaii Artists,” will be celebrated during a book-signing reception at two galleries on Jan. 13 in Hawi.
Tiffany DeEtte Shafto, founder of Contemporary Publications and Tiffany’s Art Agency, curated and designed the book featuring 50 artists from across the state. It is co-authored and edited by Lynda McDaniel.
The book recently earned a Ka Palapala Po‘okela Award, which are given bi-annually by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association to recognize the finest books published in Hawaii and to honor individuals involved in their creation.
The book signing event is a joint effort between Tiffany’s Art Agency gallery and Wishard Gallery. Both galleries have invited featured artists to autograph copies of the award-winning book from 5-7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring or buy a copy at the event. Featured artists include Christina DeHoff, Patrice Federspiel, Kate and Will Jacobson, Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides, Marlene Louchheim, Timothy Allan Shafto, Mary Spears, Harry Wishard, Shay Wahl, and others.
